Imagine a world where the odd person can still create all manner of havok for the rest of mankind, despite all that mentioned above, even with the best of intentions...

In that particular flight of space-time — neither better or worse off than our own, just different — an impending cometary crises drives the imminent scholars of natural philosophy in the various lands to advance an expedient plan to handle the threatening situation. 

But not everyone is getting with the program.
